Sandwich Croquet Club
On Friday September 29 - Sunday October 1, 2023, the Sandwich Croquet Club in Sandwich, Massachusetts held its second annual Cape Cod Invitational at its home, Sandwich Hollows Golf Club in East Sandwich, Massachusetts. This was a singles only event in two flights - Championship and First Flight with each flight having eight players. This year, we had use of the club’s brand new court along with the original court. It certainly helped with making sure we didn’t fall behind due to our heavy overnight rain on Saturday.
Bob Gannon (3) won the Championship Flight against skillful top seed Jim Turner (1). It was back and forth but in the end, Bob’s consistency saw him through. First Flight was a nail biter with a GREAT late game comeback by Kathleen Green (8) over an undefeated until the final, 90 year old Fred Beck (7). (Author’s note – may I be playing croquet one quarter as well if and when I reach 90!!)
Notable handicap tracking point gains: Bob Gannon (8) +19, Chris Glowaki (5) +10, Ed Gardella (6) +9, George Claffey (6) +8, and Clint Holland (12) +22.
A big thanks to Ed Gardella, Eric Hieser, and Mike Bjornholm for making sure our courts were in tip top shape, freshly marked and manicured. Also, thanks to Dave Polidor, Grounds Superintendent of the Sandwich Hollows Golf Course for adjusting his mowing and watering schedule and loaning us a squeegee (just in case). During the tournament Gail Bjornholm , Heather and Heather Welch had food duty, making sure breakfast and lunch was ready and available for players, and at the end of the day cleaning up only to start all over the next day! A huge thank you goes out to members Clint and Rosemary Holland for opening their home for a wonderful dinner on Friday evening. We were grateful for the support of club members who came out to spectate and help with deadness boards and especially Sandwich Croquet Club President Jean Lynch for her second to none leadership!
